Geist Magazine

I was asked to shoot a story for Geist magazine, which is a collaboration between creative professionals, and students from University College of the Arts. The brief was quite open but the shoot had to incorporate student’s work from the textiles course. A lot of the students had made printed textiles referencing natural patterns but contrasting with digital printing techniques and laser cut shapes. I decided it might be a good time to resurrect and idea I had had a while ago for a men’s look book which became a different shoot in the end. I wanted to shoot around North East London, where the city starts to give way to open spaces, and the is a real meeting of the man made and the natural. Part of my childhood was spent in an area like this, where we had a pylon in our playground, and you could walk along the canal past nature reserves and industrial factories alike. I think it’s very beautiful, and for once I was quite pleased to have an overcast grey day as it suited the mood perfectly. Also I should mention our lovely model Hollie, who was one of the most enthusiastic and sweet girls I have worked with this year; she really has a passion for what she does, is ridiculously photogenic and is certainly destined for great things.

ISWAI by Caggie Dunlop

Last week I photographed Caggie Dunlop from Made in Chelsea, for her clothing website ISWAI (it starts with an idea)

We didn’t have long to shoot but she’s a really beautiful girl, with a glowing Aussie tan so the shots have come out really nicely and are up on the site now.

Animated gifs for Never Underdressed

This week Never Underdressed launched, a new online fashion mag from the people behind Shortlist. The site has really embraced “new” web media, such as short fashion films and moving gifs, so I was really pleased to be asked to get involved, as this is something I’m always exploring a little bit with my shoots, and want to do more of.

I shot the “staff portraits” for the site, but as animated fashion gifs. I really hope to do more with these guys in the future as I think they will really start to push the web as a medium for a magazine in a more interesting way.

This is just a selection, you can see all the gifs in context here

Look books for DC Brands

It seems hard to imagine now, but remember just a few weeks ago we were shivering in the coldest “spring” imaginable?! March days that required several pairs of socks and a thick coat…. I spent two of those days out and about in London shooting a few look books for handbag company DC Brands, with some very hardy models. The brief was unashamedly “LONDON” and we certainly covered a lot of ground, hitting up Islington, De Beauvoir, Spitelfields, Buckingham Palace, St James’ Park, Lambeth Walk, Oxford Circus and Covent Garden all in just two days. The conditions were very trying, so I think well done to all involved for making this happen.

Gizzi Erskine for Refinery 29

I spent a morning running around Marylebone with Gizzi Erskine for US style magazine Refinery 29. Gizzi was sharing her favourite local hangouts, the highlight for me being Meat Liquor, where we had a dirty burger for lunch. Awesome.

A few weeks ago, I finally shot a personal shoot that I had been planning for ages with hairstylist David Wadlow. I suppose it was partly inspired by the Olympics and the commentary surrounding that on strong female role models. It was also partly inspired by my own personal experience of getting into sport and fitness over the last 18 months. I started by signing up for a 10k with members of my old studio Roof Unit, and discovered, after the initial first few weeks of feeling utterly useless, that I was getting faster, fitter and stronger, and feeling really good. Exercise has become the antidote to the downsides of freelance life, giving me a focus and a way to achieve that is not work related - but has also got me thinking about how I represent female bodies in my work. So I suppose this shoot is a very obvious first step in addressing that, and bringing that side of things into my work.
